Onyx Tortoise Sculpture, $150 onyx_double_sculpture

The Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) has partnered with Nature’s Own in Colorado to make available for purchase a variety of onyx tortoise sculptures. 100% of the proceeds from the sales of these sculptures benefits the TSA’s conservation programs in Madagascar. This beautiful stone is from the Balochistan Province in western Pakistan. Skilled artisans in Karachi, Pakistan, turn solid stone blocks on lathes to create beautiful bowls, vases and other items. Onyx is formed from dissolved carbonate minerals (usually calcite) when limestone or dolomite sediments come into contact with hot water via volcanic activity. Red, green and orange colors result from trace amounts of impurities. Thanks to these varieties of coloration and banding, each sculpture is as unique as it is beautiful. Domestic shipping $20, higher for international.

Hand-woven "Hicatee" baskets, $10

hicatee_basket_top_optThis one-of-a-kind Hicatee turtle was handcrafted by Conception Choc, a Ketchi Mayan from the village of Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz has about 500 residents, mostly children, and is located in the Toledo District in southernmost Belize.  The turtle is made from the fibers of a small palm called the “Jippy Joppa.”  The different colors of the fibers are made by drying the fibers in the sun for differing lengths of time, requiring no artificial dyes. (Rollover photo for detail)

The sale of these handicrafts provides a financial incentive for the local Mayans to keep the rainforests intact, as this palm grows best under the canopy of the forest. It also provides an important alternative economic livelihood to the traditional slash and burn agriculture.

The TSA is selling these turtles to benefit its Hicatee (Dermatemys mawii) programs in Belize.
