TSA Africa

TSA Africa is based in Senegal and is comprised of a network of researchers from 16 countries. Tomas Diagne (Chair) is currently writing a field identification manual for African tortoises and terrapins for TSA Africa’s network, members and partners. A TSA poster on the tortoises and terrapins of Africa is also in progress. Land has been purchased in Senegal to build a future breeding and educational center for the study and conservation African chelonians. This center will be called the African Chelonian Institute, and it is hoped that it will eventually also house a public educational display facility, library and dormitory for students and researchers to learn about all African species. In 2010, funding is being sought to conduct an assessment of the status and distribution of tortoises and terrapins of the Congo Basin, including several countries in Central Africa.
