The Wildlife Conservation Society’s Department of Herpetology and International Programs Division initiated a joint program for chelonian conservation in Myanmar in 1999. Originally a response to the report of Burmese star tortoise smuggling out of Myanmar, in the following years the program developed with a series of training workshops, headstarting programs, and field surveys. Several of Myanmar’s endemic turtle species have been targeted for local protection and captive management under the joint direction of WCS field personnel and Myanmar’s Forestry Department.
