Do not take our Freshwater Turtles for Granted

John Cann

In 1993 I wrote an article titled ‘Do not take our Freshwater Turtles for Granted’ which highlighted the issues facing the future of Australian freshwater turtles. This was based on nearly half a century of diving and searching for turtles throughout Australia. I identified numerous instances of declines or poor health in turtle populations particularly in eastern Australia. While research on freshwater turtles has become more widespread with Universities and Government agencies, these studies have tended to focus mainly on the aspects of ecology, with only a few studies being directed at turtles under threat. My talk will be about the major threats I see today for the long-term survival of Australian freshwater turtles and the lack of investigation and resources devoted to these escalating problems.
